Veterans Disability Benefits in Wyoming

With its majestic landscapes, blue skies, and down-to-earth charm, Wyoming embodies the spirit of the American West.

It's also home to over 40,000 veterans. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) recognizes the dedication and sacrifice of these brave individuals and provides support in the form of VA benefits.

One important benefit available to veterans is the VA Disability program. The VA provides monthly compensation to Wyoming veterans who have disabilities resulting from their military service.

The VA Disability Program

The VA uses a rating system to measure the severity of a veteran's disability. Each disability gets a rating from 10% to 100%, and this rating determines the monthly financial support the veteran can receive.

In many instances, a veteran is required to undergo a Compensation & Pension (C&P) examination to examine their disability. A VA doctor will evaluate the disability in order to assign a rating.

If a veteran has multiple disabilities, the VA assigns each one a separate rating. The individual ratings are then merged into one combined disability rating.

Eligibility Guidelines for VA Disability Benefits

Before Wyoming veterans can qualify for VA benefits, they must satisfy several requirements.

Both of these must be true:

  • You have an existing condition, either physical or mental, that impacts your health, and
  • Your service history includes active duty, active duty for training, or inactive duty training.

And, at least one of the following must be true:

  • You incurred an injury or sickness during your military service that can be connected to your current condition. This is known as an in-service disability claim.

    or
  • An existing injury or illness from before your military service worsened due to your service — called a pre-service disability claim, or
  • You have a disability that is associated with your active-duty service but it only manifested after your service ended. This is known as a post-service disability claim.

Maintain thorough medical records and military reports, and collect any evidence that ties your current health issue to your time in service. You may need to ask your healthcare provider for copies of these records.
